How to Introduce Your Child to a Psychologist (Without the Stress)

Nervous about that first appointment? Here's how to explain therapy to your child in a positive, honest way that helps them feel safe and ready.

Keep it simple and positive

You don't need a big, serious talk. Explain a psychologist as a friendly grown-up whose job is to help children with big feelings and worries — 'a feelings doctor' or 'a talking-and-playing helper'. Keep your tone light and reassuring.

What to say (and not say)

  • Do: 'We're going to meet someone kind who helps kids feel better.'
  • Do: Be honest that you'll be nearby and it's a safe place.
  • Don't: Frame it as punishment or say they're 'bad' or 'broken'.
  • Don't: Over-explain or make it sound scary or clinical.
  • Do: Let them ask questions and answer simply and calmly.

Answering 'why do I have to go?'

Reassure them that lots of children see psychologists, just like they see a doctor or dentist. Emphasise that it's help, not trouble — a place to feel better, play, and talk if they want to.

The first session

First sessions are gentle and often playful; there's no pressure to talk about anything before they're ready. When children feel their parents are calm and positive about it, they usually settle quickly.

Worried about your child?

You don't have to figure it out alone. Talk to a qualified child psychologist — in Lahore or online across Pakistan.
